1. What extent do network characteristics mediate the impact of these external factors on the OSS participants' dynamic membership decisions, and hence the sability of the network?

Through the lens of "Ising Theory"

The Ising theory is generally concerned with basic patterns in dynamic interactions among physical objects or economic agents

tiny magnets interact magnetically in such a way that their general tendency is to point in a common direction that has a natural mapping to a "herded" state. this tendency is destroyed if outside random noises(temperature) become high.

Perform computer simulations: Monte Carlo

Key Findings

membership herding is highly present when external influences are weak, but decreases significatly when external influences increase
propensity for membership herding is most likely to be seen in a large network with random connectivity
for large networks, when external influences are weak, random connectivity will result in higher network strength than scale-free connectivity

+ scale-free connectivity appears to be less volatile than random connectivity in response to an increase in thje strength of external influences.
